TODAY'S GAME: The second of a four game series and the sixth of eight meetings with the Red Sox, the second of four at The Diamond. Richmond is 0-5 vs. Pawtucket. Game six of an eight game homestand (the Braves are 0-5). The Braves were 2-6 vs. the Red Sox last season, 1-3 at The Diamond. This is the 30th of 48 games vs. North Division opponents, Richmond is 10-19 vs. the North Division. The 18th of 24 home games vs. North Division opponents (Richmond is 9-8). The Braves are 325-329 all- time vs. Pawtucket. The Braves are fourth in the South, 22.5 games behind first place Charlotte. The Red Sox third in the North, eight and a half games back.
LAST NIGHT'S GAME: The Red Sox beat the Braves 11-7 at The Diamond Saturday. The Red Sox erupted for nine runs over the final three innings to beat the Braves for the fifth straight time. The Sox took a 1-0 lead in the first on a sacrifice fly by Ron Calloway. The Braves tied the game in the home half on Bill McCarthy's RBI single. Jonathan Schuerholz put the Braves in front 2-1 with an RBI single in the second. The Sox tied the game in the third when Dustin Pedroia chased a run home with a single. The Braves opened up a 5-2 lead in the fourth on a three run home run by James Jurries. Tony Pena smacked a two run shot in the fifth to make it 7-2. Pawtucket began their comeback with a three run seventh. Alejandro Machado knocked in a run with a single. Adam Stern produced a run with a fielder's choice ground ball, and a run scored on a wild pitch. Hee-Sop Choi bashed a two run homer in the eighth to tie the game. The Sox batted around in the ninth to move in front. Calloway produced the go-ahead runs with a two-run single. Jeff Bailey and Enrique Wilson also knocked in runs with singles to make the score 11-7. Barry Hertzler picked up the win. The Sox bullpen pitched 4.2 innings of scoreless relief. Manny Acosta took the loss. Brayan Pena and Cesar Crespo had three hits each for the Braves. Richmond totaled 17 hits. Pedroia had three hits for the Red Sox.
ROSTER MOVES: 3B Martin Prado was activated from the DL just prior to last night's game. He has missed 14 games with a hamstring pull. RHP Paul Bush, who was promoted from Double-A Mississippi, will be activated upon his arrival. The roster now stands at 23 (11 pitchers, three catchers, five infielders, and four outfielders). The Braves have made 71 roster moves this season. 3B Wes Timmons remains on the DL (thumb).
THE NUMBER CRUNCH: Jamal Strong has hits in seven straight games (7-26 .269). Braves pitchers are 7-23 at the plate (.304) with an RBI and SB. Braves pinch hitters are 2-19 (.105). Michael Ryan has hits in the last four games he's started. Eight current Atlanta Braves (seven of them pitchers) have been promoted from Richmond this season (Scott Thorman, Lance Cormier, Tyler Yates, Phil Stockman, Horacio Ramirez, Chad Paronto, Macay McBride, and Ken Ray). Five current R-Braves have appeared with Atlanta this season: Martin Prado, Brayan Pena, Tony Pena, Chuck James, and Peter Moylan. The Braves have had 14 players promoted to Atlanta this season. They had 14 called up all of last year.
ON THE LEADER BOARD: Richmond is second in the IL in extra inning games played (12). The Braves are second in the IL in stolen base percentage behind Charlotte. They have swiped 47 and have been caught 16 times (74.6%). Their 17 caught stealings is tied for fewest in the IL with Louisville. The Braves four wins when trailing after eight innings is tops in the International League. The Braves are tied for fourth in fielding percentage. Richmond is last in the IL in ERA. The Braves are also last in batting average with runners in scoring position (.216). No other IL club is under .222 and only one other club (Pawtucket) is hitting less than .231 with runners in scoring position. Scott Thorman was second in the league in batting average (.324), home runs (15), fourth in RBI (44), was leading the league in hits (83), second in slugging percentage (.570), and tied for third in extra base hits (31) at the time of his call up to Atlanta
