Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
WINNIPEG, MB - The Winnipeg Goldeyes (19-17) lost 6-1 to the Wichita Wingnuts at Shaw Park on Monday night.
The Wingnuts took (23-13) a 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning on back-to-back home runs. With one out, Tony Thomas hit a towering fly ball to left that just cleared the fence. Fernando Perez followed with a line drive, opposite-field shot to left-centre.
In the top of the seventh, Ryan Willard and Leo Vargas started the inning with back-to-back singles. After Logan Watkins grounded into a double play, Zach Nehrir doubled down the left field line to score Willard with the Wingnuts' third run. Abel Nieves then reached on a throwing error charged to shortstop Andrew Sohn. Nehrir scored on the play to make it 4-0.
Winnipeg rallied in the bottom of the seventh against Wingnuts' starter Jordan Cooper. Eric Aguilera singled through the right side on the ninth pitch of his at bat leading off. Sohn followed with a single up the middle. After Cooper retired the next two hitters, Kevin Garcia drew a four-pitch walk. Austin Boyle relieved Cooper, and Jordan Ebert coaxed an 11-pitch bases loaded walk to force home Aguilera with the Goldeyes' first run of the night. Dave Sappelt then smashed a hard groundball along the third base line. Nieves made a diving stop to his right behind the bag to rob Sappelt of a potential game-tying extra-base hit.
The Wingnuts then added two runs in the top of the eighth on a Willard sacrifice fly and a Watkins two-out, infield single.
Kevin McGovern (2-4) started for the Goldeyes and took the loss, allowing four runs, three earned, on seven hits in seven innings. McGovern walked one and struck out one.
Cooper (4-3) picked up the win, allowing one earned run on four hits over six and two-thirds. Cooper walked three and struck out four.
Brandon Bingel threw one and one-third innings of scoreless relief for the Goldeyes. Sappelt's hitting streak came to an end at 11 games.
The series continues Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. Alex Boshers (2-3, 4.09) faces left-hander Casey Harman (4-1, 2.30). Tickets for all Goldeyes' home games are on sale now by visiting www.ticketmaster.ca/Goldeyes, or visiting any Ticketmaster location, including the box office at Shaw Park.
