Wichita Wingnuts News Release
SIOUX CITY, IA- The Wichita Wingnuts (39-18) tied a franchise record with their 11th consecutive win on Monday night, blanking the Sioux City Explorers (23-33) 2-0 at Lewis and Clark Park.
The shutout was the Wingnuts' seventh as a team this season.
Chris Smith led Wichita with eight scoreless innings on just 95 pitches. Smith scattered four hits, walke only one, and tied a season-high with nine strikeouts. Smith retired nine batters in a row at one point, and 13 of 14 from the third inning into the seventh. Smith allowed just two runners past second base and retired the leadoff hitter in all eight innings that he started.
The Wingnuts broke a scoreless tie in the top of the sixth inning. Jake Kahaulelio walked with one out and took second on a groundball single to right field by John Rodriguez. C.J. Ziegler followed with a single to right that scored Kahaulelio.
Wichita plated an insurance run in the top of the ninth. Abel Nieves drew a one-out walk and went to third when Cole Armstrong doubled off the right-center field wall. David Amberson executed a safety squeeze bunt to the right side of the infield that brought in Nieves.
Josh Dew struck out two during a perfect bottom of the ninth inning to earn his 13th save.
Richard Salazar took the loss for Sioux City, allowing one earned run on four hits in seven innings. Salazar walked three and struck out five.
Ziegler, Rodriguez, and Nieves each finished with two hits. Both pitching staffs retired the leadoff hitter in every inning.
The series and road trip conclude on Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. Ryan Scoles faces fellow true rookie Andy Noga. All the action can be heard locally on Oldies 92.7 KWME and worldwide at www.pressboxproductionsradio.com
