
Wingnuts Take Series Opener in Sioux City

SIOUX CITY, IA- The Wichita Wingnuts (22-12) beat the Sioux City Explorers (14-19) 5-3 at Lewis and Clark Park on Thursday night.
Justin Klipp earned his first win as a Wingnut, allowing one earned run on seven hits in six innings. Klipp walked one and struck out three.
Wichita took a 3-1 lead with three runs in the top of the third. Cole Armstrong walked with one out and advanced to second on a single to right from Abel Nieves. David Amberson tied the game with a groundball single to right. Nieves and Amberson took third and second respectively when Peter Barrows' throw came through to home plate. After Jared McDonald flied out to left, Ryan Khoury made it 3-1 with a sharp, groundball single to center.
Klipp made the lead stand, escaping jams in the fourth and sixth innings. Klipp retired Alberto Espinosa on a force play with two outs to strand the bases loaded in the fourth. In the sixth, Klipp worked around a first and second situation with no outs. Bryan Pounds grounded out to third, while Klipp struck out Leugim Barroso. Brian Bistagne made the final out with a line drive to right that was caught by Amberson.
Wichita added two more runs in the top of the seventh. McDonald lined a single to left and came home two batters later when Jake Kahaulelio hit a long home run down the left field line.
Andrew Aizenstadt and Daniel Bennett each worked a scoreless inning in relief of Klipp.
Sioux City rallied for two runs against Kyle Wahl in the bottom of the ninth on a Sam Judah groundout and a Yusuke Inoguchi RBI double. Josh Dew came in and struck out Peter Barrows, who represented the tying run at the plate, to notch the save.
Bistagne hit a two-out, RBI single in the bottom of the second to account for the only run against Klipp.
Andy Noga took the loss for Sioux City, allowing five earned runs on seven hits in six and one-third innings. Noga walked three and struck out four.
Nieves had two hits and has hit safely in 13 games in a row. Kahaulelio has hit in eight straight.
