Wichita Wingnuts News Release
LAREDO, TX (July 26, 2015) - The Wichita Wingnuts reached the American Association All-Star break following Sunday night's match-up against Laredo. The short-handed squad showed some resilience to come back from an early deficit and grab a two-run lead in the top of the fourth. However, without T.J. Mittelstaedt, John Nester, and Jon Link, who exited the game after just 2.0 innings, the Wingnuts faded down the stretch. Laredo scored at least one run in five innings and put together three with multiple tallies to pull away for a 14-5 victory.
The game was billed as a premier pitching match-up between Link and Laredo right-hander Greg Holle, but offense took control immediately. Ty Morrison reached on a bunt single to start the home first and then stole second. Kevin Taylor's fielder's choice groundball moved the runner to third and Morrison scored on a Denis Phipps infield hit to make it 1-0. Juan Silverio doubled the lead with his seventh home run of the year, a solo shot, to open the second. Link departed after those two innings with forearm tightness.
The Wingnuts (37-25) cut into the lead with an unearned run in the third and then chased Holle while jumping in front in the fourth. Joash Brodin reached on an error which was followed by three consecutive singles that drove in two runs and chased the starter. Brent Dean put down a bunt to move the remaining runners into scoring position and then Kain scored on a wild pitch from reliever Ryan Beckman (3-0) to make it 4-2. Holle lasted just 3.0 innings and allowed four runs, two of them earned, on five hits.
It did not take long for the Lemurs (34-28) to respond. They plated six runs on the strength of seven hits against Kuzminsky (2-3) in the bottom of the fourth. Six of the hits, including three doubles came after there were two outs. The lead had swung to 8-4 in Laredo's favor following the inning.
Laredo scored three more runs in each of the next two innings to pull away. Jeudy Valdez had a two-run double and D'Vontrey Richardson an RBI single in the fifth to push the lead to 11-4 and then following a solo home run from Matt Padgett in the top of the sixth, Valdez launched a three-run blast of his own to increase the margin to 14-5.
Eight of the nine Laredo hitters had at least one hit and seven of them registered multiple knocks. The Lemurs 19 hits were a season-high. They also turned a triple play defensively in the second inning in 5-4-3 fashion on a Harrison Kain groundball.
The Wingnuts will enjoy two days off before returning to the field on Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. Eastern Time in New Jersey.
