Wichita Wingnuts News Release
WICHITA, KS (May 28, 2014) - To be a really good team in professional baseball, it takes an uncanny ability to win games in a variety of fashions. On Wednesday night against the Laredo Lemurs, Wichita used a huge seventh inning mistake by a Laredo fielder and a big hit by Ryan Khoury to escape with a 2-1 win, a season-high fourth in a row, at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium.
The Lemurs (6-7) jumped ahead in the fourth inning when they scored an unearned run off of Wingnuts' starter Justin Klipp. Devin Goodwin singled up the middle for Laredo's first hit of the game to begin the frame. He stole second a couple of pitches later, and when catcher J.T. Wise's throw was wide of the bag and bounced off of Jake Kahulelio's glove and into right field, Goodwin raced to third. The next batter Travis Denker lofted a sacrifice fly to center that scored Goodwin. The RBI was Denker's American Association leading 18th of the year.
That would be the only run scored off of Klipp, who was nothing but efficient once again tonight. The right-hander pitched 7.0 innings, allowed just the unearned run on four hits and one walk, while striking out one. The quality start was the 10th in 13 games for a Wingnuts' starting pitcher.
The Wingnuts (10-4) didn't have much success themselves against Lemurs' pitcher Tyler Pearson until the fateful seventh inning. Mike Hernandez began the inning by hitting a high fly ball to medium-depth left field. It appeared to be a routine play for Laredo left-fielder J.P. Ramirez until he lost sight of the ball in the lights. It dropped harmlessly next to him as Hernandez eased into second with a double. When Ramirez bobbled the ball in his attempt to pick it up, the Wichita designated hitter hustled to third. After Chris McMurray flied out, Colt Loehrs blooped a single down the third base line to tie the game at one before being thrown out in an attempt to take second base. David Amberson then walked, before Khoury provided the dagger, a double off the top of the wall in the left field power alley. Amberson scored easily and the Wingnuts led 2-1.
Pearson ended up allowing two runs in 6.2 innings on five hits and five walks. The right-hander struck out one batter.
Patrick Mincey allowed only a lone hit in the eight while working a clean inning. Matt Nevarez earned his seventh save of the year by striking out the top three hitters in Laredo's batting order consecutively.
Tomorrow night the Wingnuts will try to sweep their first series of the season when Laredo comes to the ballpark for a final game at 7:05 p.m. The Wingnuts turn to lefty Alan Williams, while the Lemurs go with RHP Sean Tracey. There will be $2 Shiner Blondes served all night and a home run derby on the field following the game courtesy of PF Chang's.
