May 28, 2014 - American Association (AA)
Amarillo ThunderHeads News Release

The Amarillo Sox used the crooked number offensively to take down the Trois-Rivieres Aigles 9-5 Wednesday night in front of 1,042 fans at Amarillo National Bank Sox Stadium. The win gives the Sox the series win over the Aigles, and is also the fifth win in six games for Amarillo. The Sox also improve to 7-6, the first time above .500 since Opening Night.

Amarillo began the scoring in the bottom of the second inning off Aigles starter Alexander Burkard. The Sox loaded the bases with no one out on a walk by Keith Brachold and walks by Jeremy Williams and Kevin Mahoney. Jeff Farnham then drove in a pair of runs on a single to left field, and Jason Martin drove in a run on a sacrifice fly to give the Sox a 3-0 lead.

The Aigles would chip away off Sox starter Mike Nannini in the next two innings. Felix Brown singled home a run in the top of the third, and Joey Side hit an RBI double in the top of the fourth to cut the Sox lead to 3-2.

But Amarillo would blow the game open in the bottom of the fourth inning. The Sox batted around, and scored five runs on four hits to take an 8-2 lead. Josh Miller hit a two-run single, Cory Patton hit an RBI single, and Brachold added a two-run double in consecutive at-bats to give the Sox a commanding lead.

Trois-Rivieres would take advantage of some wild Sox pitching in the top of the sixth to make the game more interesting. The Aigles only had one hit in the inning, but five walks by Nannini, Kevin Rogers, and Casey Beck allowed three runs to come in. Beck would settle down to get the final two outs of the inning, and preserve the 8-5 Sox lead.

Amarillo would add an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI groundout by Jeff Farnham to increase the lead to 9-5. Celson Polanco, Erik Draxton, and Cory Patton combined for the final three innings of relief, allowing just one hit and striking out five. Nannini got the win for the Sox to improve to 2-1 on the season, while Burkard took the loss for the Aigles. He falls to 0-2.

The Sox open up a four game series against the Grand Prairie Airhogs Thursday night in Amarillo. It's the first time the Sox have faced a divisional opponent in the American Association South. It will be a Thirsty Thursday at the ballpark, presented by Budweiser. First pitch will be at 7:05.
