WINGNUTS WALK OFF
The Wingnuts claimed their 1st win of 2016 in thrilling fashion Saturday night as Christian Stringer hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth to send the Lawrence-Dumont Stadium crowd home happy after a 3-2 win over Lincoln. With the game tied 2-2 entering the inning, the Saltdogs Matthew Shepherd walked two of the first three, putting the winning run in scoring position for Stringer. The second baseman knocked the first pitch of the at-bat into right and Harrison Kain wheeled around from second to avoid Wichita's first 0-3 start since 2010. The Wingnuts fell in an early hole for the third straight night, as Ryan Wiggins doubled a pair home to put Lincoln ahead in the second. Wichita starter Tim Brown settled in after that, allowing the Wingnuts to work their way back into it. In the fifth, a walk, single and double steal set Stringer up for an RBI chance, and he came through with a fielder's choice which saw Kain narrowly avoid a tag at the plate. T.J. Mittelstaedt tied it in the next inning, singling home his first run of the campaign after leading the Wingnuts in that category last year.
BROWN MOWS 'EM DOWN
After surrendering the two-out two-run double to Ryan Wiggins in the second to put the Saltdogs up 2-0, Wichita starter Tim Brown settled in, retiring the next 16 in a row. The right-hander did not allow another base runner until the eighth, his final inning of work. The former Saltdog ended up with two runs allowed on five hits over eight innings against his former club, turning in the second straight quality start from a Wichita hurler. All three Wingnuts starters have tossed at least six innings so far in the series, meaning the bullpen has stayed fresh, only working six innings through the first three games of the young season.
FIRST IMPRESSIONS
New second baseman Christian Stringer has made the most of his first three games in a Wichita uniform, starting with back-to-back multi-hit efforts on Thursday and Friday. In addition to last night's walk-off single, the former Rice Owl drove in another run earlier in the game, making him the first Wingnut to drive in multiple runs in a game this year. Stringer is the early team leader in that category with three.
