Wichita Wingnuts News Release
WICHITA, Kans. - The Lincoln Saltdogs hit four home runs Sunday afternoon in route to a 9-6 win over the Wichita Wingnuts, giving the visitors three out of the four games in the weekend series at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium.
Lincoln (3-1) wasted no time in getting to Wichita starter Eddie Medina (0-1), as two batters into the game Alexi Colon put the visitors up 1-0 with a double. Jon Smith drove in a run with a single later in the frame, and the Saltdogs added a third on a wild pitch to make it 3-0.
Wichita (1-3) picked up their first run in the second. Richard Prigatano launched a solo shot to left off of Saltdogs starter Bennett Parry (1-0), the first homer of the year by a Wingnut.
The onslaught of homers by the Saltdogs began in the fourth. Christian Ibarra was the first to hit one out for Lincoln, hitting a two-run shot to put the Saltdogs in front 5-1. They then hit two more long balls in the fifth as both Curt Smith and Jon Smith hit solo home runs. The final of Lincoln's four home runs came in the sixth, as a Pat Kelly solo shot made it 8-1.
Wichita began to crawl back into it in the eighth. Brennen Salgado doubled home a pair, collecting his first professional hit and RBIs to shrink the deficit to five.
After Lincoln stretched the lead back out to sixth with a tally in the top of the ninth, the Wingnuts closed the gap further in their half of the frame. Prigatano capped his three-RBI day with a two-run single, and Salgado joined him one batter later, driving his third run of the day in with a sacrifice fly.
A pinch-hit single by Matt Chavez brought the tying run to the plate in the form of Christian Stringer, but Lincoln lefty Jeff McKenzie induced a fly ball to center to end the contest and earn his first save of the year.
After an off day on Monday, the Wingnuts will head out on their first road trip on Tuesday when they begin a three-game set with the Joplin Blasters at Joe Becker Stadium. Right-hander Jon Link (0-1, 6.00) will be on the hill for Wichita, while Joplin will counter with fellow righty Josh Evans (0-1, 9.00). First pitch is slated for 6:35 p.m. and the game can be heard on 1410 AM KGSO, as well as on TuneIn.
