June 23, 2016 - American Association (AA)
Wichita Wingnuts News Release

Hello All,

After claiming their fifth straight series victory by taking two out of three in Laredo, the Wingnuts return home tonight to begin their only regular season series with the Sioux City Explorers at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium.

___

Wichita Wingnuts (18-14) vs. Sioux City Explorers (15-17)

RHP Tim Brown (2-2, 6.75) vs. RHP Bryan Escanio (1st start)

7:05 p.m. - Lawrence-Dumont Stadium (Wichita, Kans.)

LATE RALLY SINKS WICHITA

The Wichita Wingnuts saw their opportunity to sweep the Laredo Lemurs fall short Wednesday night, falling 3-1 at Uni-Trade Stadium. Starting pitching dominated on both sides, as both Ryan Kussmaul and Barret Loux went seven scoreless innings for their respective teams, keeping the game scoreless into the eighth inning. In the eighth, Wichita took the lead, as Richard Prigatano drew a bases loaded walk to make it 1-0. The Wingnuts had an opportunity to score more in the frame, but were turned away as Laredo turned an inning-ending double play. The Lemurs then came right back in the home half. With a man on and two outs, the home team drew back-to-back walks to load the bases for J.D. Pulfer. The second baseman lined a double to center, clearing the bases for Laredo and giving them a 3-1 lead on what was their only extra-base hit of the series. The Lemurs turned to Troy Marks to get the final three outs, and the right-hander retired Wichita in order to salvage the finale game in the series for Laredo. The win pulls the Lemurs back within a half game of Wichita for first in the South.

KUSSMAUL SHINES AGAIN

In his second start as a Wingnut, righty Ryan Kussmaul shined again last night, yielding just one hit and two walks over seven shutout frames. In his first two starts, the former Chicago White Sox farmhand has yet to allow an earned run in 12.0 innings. Kussmaul has also allowed just nine base runners over those two outings with five hits, two walks, and two hit batters. Opponents are hitting just .128 against the 29-year old veteran, who has struck out nine so far in his two outings and taken two no-decisions.

UP NEXT: SIOUX CITY

After their three-game series down in Laredo, the Wingnuts are back at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium to open up a seven-game homestand where they will see the Sioux City Explorers for three and the Texas AirHogs for four. Sioux City is first on the docket for Wichita, in what will be the only regular season meeting between the two clubs in 2016. The Wingnuts and Explorers met in just one series in 2015 as well, with Sioux City taking three out of the four contests, including a doubleheader sweep to start the set.
