Wichita Wingnuts News Release

LAREDO, Texas - The Wichita Wingnuts held a 1-0 lead entering the bottom of the eighth inning Tuesday, but a late rally by the Laredo Lemurs gave the home team a 3-1 sweep-avoiding victory at Uni-Trade Stadium.

With a man on and two out, Jesse Pratt (1-1) walked back-to-back Lemurs (18-15) to load the bases for J.D. Pulfer. Frankie Reed came on to face Pulfer, and the Laredo second baseman emptied the bases with a double to center to give the Lemurs the only three runs they needed.

Troy Marks came in for the top of the ninth for the home team, and retired the Wingnuts (18-14) in order to close it out for his first save of the year.

Pitching dominated on both sides in the early going, as neither team scored until the eighth. The first three Wingnuts all reached in the frame to load the bases. After a fielder's choice cut down a runner at the plate for the first out of the inning, Richard Prigatano drew a walk, giving Wichita the contest's first run.

After the walk, Jeff Inman (2-1) bounced back to induce an inning-ending double play to keep the Wingnuts from adding any more runs in the frame.

Both starters lasted seven scoreless innings on the night, but neither factored into the decision. On the Wichita side, Ryan Kussmaul allowed just one hit and two walks over his seven scoreless frames, racking up six strikeouts.

Barret Loux was nearly as good on the Laredo side, giving up five hits in his seven scoreless innings, while striking out nine in what was his second start with the Lemurs.

The Wingnuts return home Thursday to begin a three-game series with the Sioux City Explorers at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium. Wichita will turn to veteran right-hander Tim Brown (2-2, 6.75), while Sioux City has yet to announce it's starting pitcher for Thursday's contest. First pitch is set for 7:05, and the game can be heard on 1410 AM KGSO, as well as on TuneIn.
