Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
GRAND PRAIRIE, TX - The Texas AirHogs prevented a sweep and ended the Gary SouthShore RailCats four-game winning streak. Left fielder Burt Reynolds hit a three-run home run off of RailCats (17-16) ace Charle Rosario to propel the AirHogs (14-19) to their first win of the series.
The RailCats conclude their season-long nine-game road trip at 6-3 and won each series along the way. There was a chance they could end their journey on top of the Central Division, but instead will return home 1.5 games back of Lincoln.
Another meaningful streak was broken tonight; the RailCats lost a Charle Rosario start for the first time since the season opener. The Cats' ace and reigning Pitcher of the Week pitched five innings and allowed three runs. He struck out five, walked one, and gave up six hits. He was charged with the loss.
Christian Herstine was impressive in his RailCat debut, pitching two innings of scoreless relief. John Kovalik added a scoreless inning as well.
Starting pitcher Sam Martin and left fielder Burt Reynolds led the AirHogs to the victory. Martin threw 7.2 innings and only allowed one run. The right-hander gave up five hits and struck out four batters.
Reynolds supplied all the offense the Hogs needed. Michael Hurr and Juan Sanchez got on base with hits in the 3rd inning before Reynolds came to the plate. The American Association's home run leader knocked the second pitch of the at bat out of the park for his 16th blast of the season.
The RailCats grabbed the lead in the top of the 3rd inning. Masato Fukae reached base on an infield single and Jarred Mederos followed with another hit. Cameron Newell hit a sacrifice fly to score Fukae from 3rd.
Fukae and Metzger each had two hits while Jose Gonzalez was the only other RailCat to get a hit. The Cats were caught stealing three times and struck out six times.
Gary SouthShore has a day off before starting a three-game series with the division leading Lincoln Saltdogs at US Steel Yard. The two teams just played June 17-19th in Lincoln.
First pitch on Friday is at 7:10 PM and coverage begins at 6:45 on 95.9 WEFM and online at railcatsbaseball.com.
