Wichita Wingnuts News Release
WINNIPEG, Manitoba - The Wichita Wingnuts dropped their second in a row to the Winnipeg Goldeyes Saturday, falling 7-4 at Shaw Park.
The Goldeyes (46-31) struck first for the first time in the series, plating three with two outs in the first. Eddie Medina (5-4) retired the first two he faced, but back-to-back doubles by Willie Cabrera and Reggie Abercrombie gave Winnipeg a 1-0 lead. Two walks later, Casio Grider added a two-run double to stretch the lead to three.
Wichita (48-30) brought the score level with a three-run frame of their own in the third. Back-to-back singles by Leo Vargas and Garrett Gould got the inning started, and then a failed fielder's choice got the Wingnuts on the board. After another single loaded the bases, a Goldeyes error brought home Gould and Richard Prigatano to tie the score.
Winnipeg went back in front in the fourth, as Wes Darvil hit the final of three consecutive singles to put the home team back on top.
Another three-run frame in the fifth then chased Medina, with a solo home run by Grider the final blow against Wichita's starter.
The visitors pulled one back in the sixth against Mikey O'Brien (9-4), as two hits and a sacrifice fly by Brent Dean brought the Wingnuts within three.
That sixth inning tally proved to be the last run of the night on either side. Wichita threatened in the ninth as a two-out single by Vargas and a walk to Gould brought the tying run to the plate, but Victor Capellan retired Prigatano to lock up his first save with the Goldeyes.
The Wingnuts conclude their stretch of 14 straight on the road and wrap-up their series with the Goldeyes Sunday afternoon at Shaw Park. Veteran right-hander Tim Brown (7-2, 4.42) will be on the bump for Wichita, while Winnipeg will send lefty Ethan Carnes (7-1, 3.12) to the hill. First pitch is set for 1:00, and the game can be heard on 1410 AM KGSO, as well as on TuneIn.
