Wingnuts Dominate Jackals to Take Series

WICHITA, KS- The Wichita Wingnuts defeated the New Jersey Jackals 18-5 at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium on Wednesday night.
The Wingnuts set a franchise record with five home runs--including two from Jake Kahaulelio--while Ryan Hinson improved 2-0 with an eight-strikeout performance over six innings.
Wichita fell behind 1-0 in the top of the first, but responded with four runs in the bottom half and never trailed again. Ryan Khoury drew a leadoff walk and promptly stole second base. Kahaulelio reached first on an infield single to shortstop. On the same play, Angel Berroa's throw to first base sailed into foul territory, allowing Khoury to score and Kahaulelio to take second. John Rodriguez followed with a line drive single to center field that scored Kahaulelio to make it 2-0. After Mitch Einertson doubled on a flyball that fell just inside the right field line, C.J. Ziegler ripped a double to left-center field that plated two more.
Hinson worked six innings for the win, and allowed one earned run on four hits. Hinson struck out five consecutive batters over the fourth and fifth innings, and retired 13 straight from the second into the sixth. Hinson did not allow a walk and is now 9-1 lifetime at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium.
Rodriguez added a sixth run in the second inning on a groundout to third. Wichita then broke the game open with eight runs in the bottom half of the third. Ziegler led off and reached on an error by Berroa, and took second when David Peralta singled up the middle. Steve Carrillo made it 8-1 with a home run that banked off the bottom of the scoreboard in left-center field. A Salomon Manriquez walk and a Mike Conroy single set up Kahaulelio's first homer of the night. The three-run blast traveled over the upper fence in left field on a line drive. Rodriguez walked and then scored when Einertson ripped Wichita's third home run of the inning to left-center.
Wichita finished its outburst in the sixth, scoring five more runs. With Manriquez on first and one out, Kahaulelio homered on a high flyball down the left field line to increase Wichita's lead to 15-1. Rodriguez followed with a flyball to center that tailed past left fielder Bryan Sabatella and resulted in a triple. Einertson pounded a single through the middle to score Rodriguez. Ziegler knocked in the Wingnuts' final two runs with a long home run down the left field line.
The Jackals scratched out three unearned runs in the top of the seventh and one more in the top of the ninth against the Wingnuts' bullpen.
New Jersey starter Matt Chico took the loss, allowing 13 runs, 11 earned, on 12 hits in two and one-third innings. Chico walked three and struck out two.
All nine of the Wingnuts' starters had at least one hit and scored at least one run. The 18 runs scored were one shy of the Wingnuts' single-game record. Kahaulelio, Rodriguez, Einertson, Ziegler, Peralta, and Conroy all had multi-hit nights.
