
Wingnuts Acquire Slugger Avila

WICHITA, KS- The Wichita Wingnuts acquired veteran first baseman Gerardo Avila from the Frontier League's River City Rascals in advance of Friday's game at Grand Prairie.
Avila (full name pronounced huh-RAHR-doh AH-vuh-luh) hit .286 with three home runs and 27 RBI in 42 games this season for River City. The left-handed hitting slugger combined for 20 home runs and 69 RBI in just 66 games last year for the El Paso Diablos, as well as the North American League's Yuma Scorpions and Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings. Avila was a teammate of current Wingnuts Edgar Martinez, David Peralta, and Jared McDonald at various points in 2011.
The 25-year-old Avila is in his ninth season of professional baseball and originally signed with the Seattle Mariners as an international free agent in 2004. The 6-foot-2, 250-pound Avila spent six years in the Mariners' system and was in affiliated ball as recently as 2010 with the Atlanta Braves' High-A Carolina League affiliate in Myrtle Beach. Avila is a lifetime .289 hitter with a career .474 slugging percentage in 1,507 at bats. Avila has averaged 26 home runs and 114 RBI per 162 games played in his professional career.
