Winans Posts Strong Start, M-Braves Fall to Smokies 7-2

PEARL, MS - RHP Allan Winans gave up one earned run in five innings, but the Mississippi Braves (56-64, 27-24) fell 7-2 to the Tennessee Smokies (64-57, 27-25) on Tuesday night at Trustmark Park.

The M-Braves drew 10 walks but failed to take advantage, mustering just three hits and leaving 11 runners on base.

Winans went five innings for the fourth straight start, giving up two runs. He gave up four hits and two walks and struck out four. In six starts for the M-Braves, the right-hander has a 3.06 ERA with seven walks to 28 strikeouts.

With two outs in the bottom of the first, Justyn-Henry Malloy lined a double to left center. The M-Braves then drew three straight walks, and Cade Bunnell picked up his 11th RBI in seven games on his walk to make it 1-0. The M-Braves left the bases loaded to end the inning.

Malloy reached base three times with a hit and two walks. He scored both M-Braves runs. Javier Valdes, who walked in the inning, drew three walks on the night.

Bunnell went 1-for-3 with a walk and an RBI. He is batting .344 with six home runs and 24 RBI in 28 games for the M-Braves.

In the third, the Smokies brought in two runs on three hits and a key error to make it 2-1. The M-Braves pulled back to even at 2-2 after Malloy scored on a wild pitch.

The Smokies added a run in the sixth to lead 3-2.

RHP Kyle Wilcox tossed a scoreless seventh inning with two strikeouts. Wilcox has yet to allow a run in eight innings over eight outings for the M-Braves. He joined the club on August 3 from the FCL Braves.

Tennessee scored three more runs in the eighth and another in the ninth to win 7-2.

The second game of the series is on Wednesday at Trustmark Park. LHP Dylan Dodd (0-3, 3.56) makes the start for Mississippi against RHP Riley Thompson (0-5, 6.00) for Tennessee. The first pitch is at 6:35 pm CT, with coverage starting at 6:20 pm CT on 103.9 WYAB, First Pitch App, and MiLB.tv.
