Win Streak Snapped in Loss at Daytona
April 26, 2016 - Florida State League (FSL1)
Clearwater Threshers News Release
The Clearwater Threshers saw their six-game winning streak come to an end on Tuesday, as the Daytona Tortugas walked off to send the Threshers to a 5-3 loss at Jackie Robinson Ballpark in the series opener.
Down 3-2, Clearwater (13-6) tied it in the eighth after loading the bases on a pair of walks sandwiched around a hit batsman. Herlis Rodriguez came through with a single to right to score Mitch Walding and tie the game at three.
Still knotted up in the bottom of the ninth, Jesen Therrien (1-2) took over and issued a lead-off walk to Jeff Gelalich. Therrien struck out Aristides Aquino, but Brian O'Grady put an end to the contest with a walk-off homer to right.
Florida State League Pitcher of the Week Thomas Eshelman gave Clearwater six innings in the start, and permitted three runs on six hits and three walks. He recorded five strikeouts in the no-decision.
Kyle Martin extended his on-base streak to 12 games with a single in the first inning, and finished 1-for-4 with a walk.
The Threshers got off to an early 2-0 lead, as Scott Kingery opened the ballgame with a double to centerfield off starter Wyatt Strahan, and Cord Sandberg followed by dropping down a bunt single. Carlos Tocci got Clearwater on the board with a sacrifice fly to center.
An inning later, Malquin Canelo connected for a double to start the inning, and with one out Rodriguez knocked a two-base hit of his own to right field scoring Canelo to make it 2-0 Threshers.
Eshelman held Daytona in check until the fourth.
With men at the corners, Jonathan Reynoso beat out a bunt single to bring a run home, and Blake Trahan walked to load the bases with just one out. Eshelman was able to limit the damage to just a Gelalich sac fly, bringing the teams to a two-all tie.
Taylor Sparks' home run in the fifth gave Daytona the 3-2 lead.
Matt Hockenberry tossed two scoreless innings in relief of Eshelman. The right-hander has not permitted a run in 8.2 innings this season, after ending last year on a seven-inning scoreless streak.
Jimmy Herget (1-1) earned the win for the Tortugas (7-12) after tossing a zero in the top of the ninth.
Clearwater and Daytona meet for game two on Wednesday morning, with first pitch at 10:35 a.m. Matt Imhof takes the hill opposed by Tejay Antone.
