Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - A three-run eighth inning was the difference Friday night at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium as the Lansing Lugnuts defeated the Cedar Rapids Kernels, 5-2. The loss ended a season-high eight-game win streak for the Kernels (25-21).
Lansing (21-25) quickly jumped out to a 2-0 lead within the first inning. Max Schuemann's leadoff home run opened the contest. Three batters later, Shane Selman provided an RBI groundout that plated Drew Millas.
Jair Camargo cut the deficit in half during the bottom of the second. He led off with a solo shot that landed near the top of the batter's eye to close the gap to 2-1.
Gabriel Maciel forced a 2-2 tie when he scored in the fifth. With the bases loaded and two outs, he bluffed a stolen base attempt from third base, and Dalton Sawyer balked. All runners advanced one base with Maciel tallying the game-tying run.
The Lugnuts regained the lead, 5-2, within the penultimate inning. Cobie Vance reached on an error to start the eighth and eventually came home via wild pitch. Lazaro Armenteros came in after Millas grounded out, and William Simoneit followed by driving in Schuemann on an RBI groundout.
Zach Rafuse (1-0) tossed two shutout innings and won his Lugnuts debut, and Brock Whittlesey added two scoreless frames of his own for his first save with Lansing. Jonathan Cheshire (3-3) was charged for three runs including a pair of unearned runs as the losing pitcher.
The penultimate contest of this six-game series is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. Saturday. Cedar Rapids right-hander Tyler Beck (1-0, 2.63) and Lansing right-hander Colin Peluse (2-2, 5.58) are the probable pitchers. Chris Kleinhans-Schulz will have broadcast coverage of Saturday's tilt on www.kernels.com and MiLB.TV.
Postgame fireworks presented by Fleet Farm are on tap for Saturday. Dave Wright Subaru sponsors Saturday's patriotic festivities which include recognition of military heroes and special themed jerseys worn by the Kernels that are being auctioned off via the Live Source app with proceeds to benefit the ALS Association - Iowa Chapter.
