Victoria HabourCats News Release

VICTORIA, B.C. -- On Westshore U-Lock Mini-Storage Night, the Victoria HarbourCats couldn't find the key to unlock the clutch hit at the right time.

The HarbourCats outhit, outdefended and, it could be said, outpitched the Cowlitz Black Bears on Wednesday night at Sports Traders Diamond -- but that's how the game is played, with the 5-3 score ending up in the visitors' favor. That is baseball, right there.

The win, played in front of an energetic crowd of 1,338, snaps Cowlitz's six-game losing slide, and ends Victoria's three-game streak, dropping the HarbourCats to 21-22 on the season with 10 games left -- 11 if the rained out matchup with Walla Walla is needed to be replayed.

Griffin Andreychuk hit his third home run in two games, a solo shot to left in the first inning, and an Alex DeGoti two-run triple put the HarbourCats up 3-0 early, and seemingly in control.

But Cowlitz put one across in the third and three more in the fourth to take a lead they would not relinquish. Another run in the ninth inning completed the scoring.

Lefty Chris Castellanos got the win on the mound evading trouble after those opening innings and going eight innings, striking out four and walking none. He gave up nine hits, and was helped by base-running gaffes. Lars Rider got the save.

Jake Pavletich had three RBIs for Cowlitz.

HarbourCats starter Austin Dondanville's control was off with five walks, leading to four runs, in taking the loss. The fourth inning was his, and the team's, undoing.

DeGoti was 2-3 with two RBIs, Nick Meyer was 2-3 with a run, and Michael Gretler, who made two sparkling plays at first base, was 1-3.

The HarbourCats remain 2.5 games out of the last playoff spot after Corvallis lost to Klamath Falls. Realistically, the WCL teams looking likely to miss the playoffs at this point are Klamath Falls, Medford, Cowlitz, Kitsap and Wenatchee.

The two teams play again Thursday at Sports Traders Diamond, the last day game of the year, at 1pm. The HarbourCats then head to Wenatchee for a road series Friday-Saturday-Sunday before returning home to face the Yakima Valley Pippins on Monday on Wallace Driving School Fireworks Night, BC Day -- August 3.
