Win Over Pioneers Propel Pilots into First Place

The Newark Pilots (15-10) took sole ownership of the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League's West Division with a 14-8 win over the Elmira Pioneers (13-13) at Dunn Field on Sunday.
The Pilots combined for their best offensive performance of the season with 14 runs on 17 hits as they extended their current win streak to seven games. Six different batters recorded two or more hits while five players scored at least two runs.
Elmira began the contest by taking a 3-0 lead in the home half of the first. The Pioneers loaded the bases with a double from B.J. Willis (Wabash Valley C.C.), a walk from Sal Pezzino (High Point) and a single from David Bishop (Mississippi State). All three players would score to take the early advantage.
Newark swept away the momentum and the lead with a seven-run second inning. Down 3-2 with two outs and the bases full, Ray Delvalle's (Kentucky Wesleyan) two-run single put the Pilots ahead by a single tally.
Trailing 5-3, Matt Holling (Corning C.C.) again loaded the bases after hitting Randy Villa (San Joaquin Delta), who started the inning off with a base hit the first time through the lineup. The Elmira starter was replaced after giving up seven runs on five hits in a mere one and two-third innings pitched.
Reliever Jay Ferri (Rhode Island) yielded a two-run single to the first batter he faced in Nick Parent (UC Santa Barbara). He forced Michael Bolling (Lewis) to lineout to Pezzino at shortstop to finally end the inning.
Greg Schworm (Finger Lakes C.C.) drove home two more runs to increase Newark's lead to 11-4 in the sixth. Edwin Reyes (UAB) was taken off the mound following the end of the sixth. Although he finished with five walks compared to only one strikeout, Reyes got the win, surrendering six runs.
Delvalle hit another two-run single with two-outs in the top of the eighth for the 14-6 lead. Newark's second baseman was nearly unstoppable at the plate, going 4-for-5 with five RBI's and two runs.
Elmira added two runs in the eighth, but the Pioneers were retired 1-2-3 in the bottom of the ninth. Willis had a team-high two runs on two hits and one RBI.
The Newark Pilots and the Elmira Pioneers both have Monday off before returning to action on Tuesday. The Pilots return home to Colburn Park with a doubleheader against the Albany Dutchmen starting at 5:05 p.m. The Pioneers host the Glens Falls Golden Eagles at 7:05 p.m.
