West Virginia Black Bears News Release

The Black Bears scored a run to threaten in the ninth inning, but West Virginia's rally fell just short in a 4-3 loss to Williamsport on Tuesday night from Monongalia County Ballpark. Both teams had ten hits in the game.

West Virginia received a solid start from RHP Matt Anderson who took a no-decision, allowing two earned runs through four innings on two hits with three strikeouts. Williamsport took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning on 1B Darick Hall's RBI double and an RBI sacrifice fly from 3B Lucas Williams.

Black Bears' RHP Neil Kozikowski relieved Anderson in the fifth inning and was dominant, hurling the next three innings scoreless while fanning three batters. West Virginia got on the scoreboard in the sixth. 1B Albert Baur led off the frame with a walk and eventually came in to score on an RBI single off the bat of 2B Nick King, cutting the Black Bears' deficit in half, 2-1.

Just one inning later, West Virginia would tie the ballgame. After 3B Will Craig was hit by a pitch and CF Sandy Santos walked, Craig came around to cross the plate on Baur's RBI double to tie the score, 2-2.

Another pitching change would be made in the eighth as Black Bears' closer RHP Brandon Bingel entered and took the loss, allowing two earned runs over 1.1 innings. The Crosscutters broke the tie in the ninth inning as RBI singles from RF Jesus Alastre and CF David Martinelli put Williamsport ahead, 4-2.

In the ninth inning, the Black Bears would not go away quietly as Craig began the frame with a walk. Then, RF Kevin Krause lined a single to right field before a walk to Baur loaded the bases. An RBI sacrifice fly from C Chris Harvey pulled West Virginia within one, 4-3. But, closer LHP Alexander Kline came into the game for Williamsport and retired the side to log his second save of the season.

For the Black Bears, LF Hunter Owen, Baur and Craig paced the offense with two hits each. Williamsport LF Juan Luis and Hall had three hits apiece as reliever RHP Carlos Indriago earned the win allowing one earned run over 1.2 innings.

West Virginia (29-34) and Williamsport (33-29) will meet for game two of the series tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m. from Monongalia County Ballpark on Pride of West Virginia Night.
