Jupiter Hammerheads News Release
JUPITER, FL - Trevor Williams is becoming the ace of the Hammerheads pitching staff. The right-hander tossed eight shutout innings as the Sharks held on for a 3-2 win over Fort Myers on Sunday.
Williams, who was named a Florida State League All-Star last week, posted one of his best pitching performances of the season as he improved to 6-4. He allowed just four hits and needed only 87 pitches to get through eight innings. He struck out three and didn't issue a walk.
It was the third time Williams lasted eight innings this season and the first of those outings in which he did not allow a run. It was the 22-year-old's seventh quality start in his last eight outings and his ninth quality start overall.
Despite Williams' terrific performance, he was not in line for a win when he tossed his final pitch in the eighth inning. Fort Myers starter Jason Wheeler was just as good through seven innings as he shutdown the Hammerheads.
But in the eighth the Sharks finally found some offensive momentum. Ryan Goetz hit Wheeler's 108th pitch to right for a leadoff single to start the rally. That would be the night for the Miracle starter as Brandon Peterson came into the game.
After Josh Adams couldn't get a bunt down the Hammerheads caught a break on a 3-2 pitch. Goetz was running on the play and Adams hit a sinking liner to the shortstop that looked like it could be an easy double play. Instead the ball knocked off Jorge Polanco's glove as he could not catch the liner in the air. Polanco would recover to retire Adams at first but Goetz slid safely into second.
Anthony Gomez would follow with a single up the middle to score Goetz with the first run of the ballgame. Blake Barber then pulled a double down the right field line as Gomez motored around to make it a 2-0 lead.
Fort Myers would then make another pitching change calling on Steven Gruver who got Colin Moran to lineout to second. But Matt Junegel would drive in another run when he hit an opposite field single to right to give Jupiter a 3-0 advantage.
That run would end up being the difference in the game as Reid Redman allowed a two-run homer to Polanco with no outs in the ninth before retiring the next three batters via a fly out and two strikeouts to end it.
Jupiter and Fort Myers will play the finale of the brief two game series on Monday. Brad Hand will be making his second rehab outing for the Hammerheads. First pitch is at 6:35 p.m.
WP: Trevor Williams (6-4)
LP: Jason Wheeler (5-5)
SV: Reid Redman (3)
