Moncton Wildcats News Release
The Moncton Wildcats head into October with good news from the Canadian Hockey League and the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. The Wildcats are ranked second in the CHL Mosaik Mastercard Top 10 Rankings and goalie Nicola Riopel was named the QMJHL defensive player of the month for September.
The CHL ranking follows the Wildcats' best start to a season in franchise history. The previous record was broken set in 2005-2006 with a start of 5-0. The Wildcats are currently 6-0 being the only team in the QMJHL that is undefeated.
"It's nice to see the kids hard work rewarded. People have recognized that we're an improved team, but we learned a long time ago that you don't hand out trophies in September. There's a lot of hockey left," said Danny Flynn head coach and director of hockey operations for the Moncton Wildcats.
Riopel is currently leading the goaltenders in the QMJHL with a goal against average of 1.48 and the most wins (6). He is second in the league in terms of save percentage at 0.942.
"It's great to see Rio off to a great start. He trained real hard this summer and it's great to see his preparation rewarded," said Flynn
Rookie Sasha Famin was one of the four players considered for the rookie of the month.
The Wildcats are set to begin a four game home stand starting October 3 against the Shawinigan Cataractes at 7 p.m., October 5 against the Saint John Sea Dogs at 4 p.m., October 10 against Victoriaville at 7 p.m. and October 12 against the Montreal Juniors at 4 p.m.
