Moncton Wildcats News Release
Brooklyn Kalmikov's goal halfway through the third period turned into the game winner as the Wildcats edged the Shawinigan Cataractes, 2-1, Sunday at Avenir Centre.
Vincent Labelle also scored for Moncton, which won for the sixth time in seven games.
Shawinigan got the game's opening goal more than ten minutes into the first period.
But Labelle countered with three minutes left in the frame.
As the Wildcats rushed the puck into the offensive zone, Thomas Auger fed a pass from the right side to Labelle, who was driving to the net. The second-year pivot lifted it past the blocker of goalie Charles-Antoine Lavallee to tie the game at 1-1.
There was no further scoring until midway through the third period.
Mathis Cloutier knocked down a clearing attempt on the right side of the Cataractes zone, skated toward the trapezoid behind the net and threw the puck out on the short side. It deflected to Kalmikov in front of the crease and the overage winger slid it through Lavallee's legs to give Moncton the lead.
Shawinigan pulled Lavallee for an extra skater, but could not even the score.
Thomas Couture made 25 saves for the win. He was named the game's second star. Kalmikov, named first star, extended his points streak to eight games (5 goals, 13 points).
