South Georgia Wildcats News Release
Albany, Georgia- #1 and #2 took the field at the Albany Civic Center and slugged it out in a real heavyweight contest, but when the dust settled, the WB/Scranton Pioneers held on to win their 9th straight and defeat the South Georgia Wildcats by a final score of 70-62 in front of 5813 at Cooper Tire Field. The loss dropped the Wildcats to 7-3 on the season.
This was a different South Georgia team than a week ago when they struggled against 1-6 Corpus Christi. The offense was sharp throughout the evening, in spite of three turnovers, two interceptions given up by QB D. Bryant (21-35-2, 357 yards, 9 TDs) and a questionable fumble call after Bryant hit Chavis McCollister for a 17 yard completion with just over 11 minutes left in the game. McCollister turned the ball over after the tackle and WB Scranton took over, taking just two plays to put the ball in the end zone and extend their lead to 9. Until that point, both teams had gone back and forth like two fighters scoring at will.
Pioneer quarterback Ryan Vena (27-40-1, 321 yards, 8 TDs) proved why he is one of the league leaders, throwing scoring strikes to Buchie Ibeh (12-135 yds, 3 TDs), Tyreak Saviour (5-63 yds, 3 TDs), Larry Kendrick (7-84 yards, 1 TD), and DeOnte Taylor (3-39 yds, 1 TD). Vena rushed for one score, as did Terrence Glover, who took it in from 15 yards out with 2:34 left in the third period.
South Georgia's Chavis McCollister caught 16 passes for 308 yards and 9 touchdowns, garnering him Player of the Game honors. James Robinson caught a TD pass of 23 yards in the first period. Several dropped passes were critical for the Wildcats, but they stayed focused and continued to come after the Pioneers, keeping the game close until the fourth period when the wheels fell off for the âCats. Ryan threw a TD pass to Taylor with 9:27 left in the game, and on the next possession, Bryant threw an interception to Larry Kendrick which turned into a Pioneer score. South Georgia would come back late in the game with an interception by Daryon Brutley and a final touchdown to Chavis McCollister, but the onsides kick was recovered by the Pioneers, who ran the clock out winning the game.
South Georgia will be on the road next week at Tennessee Valley in a Division matchup, while Wilkes-Barre/Scranton will return home to host Alabama.
