Washington Wild Things News Release
WASHINGTON, PA-The Washington Wild Things fell to the visiting Evansville Otters by a final score of 7-6 in 10 innings. Blake Monar earned the win for the Otters while Washington reliever Pat Butler suffered the extra inning loss. Evansville closer Edgar Lopez was credited with the save.
Washington jumped on the board early off the big bat of right fielder David Popkins, who belted a solo home run over the outfield wall to give the Wild Things a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Catcher Maxx Garrett added to the lead with an RBI double scoring first baseman Lee Orr later in the at bat.
Evansville answered when second baseman Josh Allen knocked a solo shot over the left field fence to cut the deficit in half. Allen led the Otters at the plate, going 3-5 with three RBI and scoring once himself.
An Evansville fielding blunder followed by an RBI single from Washington second baseman Matt Ford pushed the score to 4-1 in favor of the home team in the bottom of the second. Evansville inched within one later in the fourth inning.
On the mound, Washington starter Tim Flight performed well in his return to the field. In his five-inning performance, the left-handed hurler tossed five strikeouts and allowed just three runs.
Ford capitalized again at the plate for Washington in the fifth with an RBI double to plate designated hitter Edinson Rincon for a 5-3 lead. The advantage lasted until the top of the seventh when Evansville catcher JD Dorgan and shortstop Cory Urquhart scored off of a double from center fielder Robbie Robinson.
Nine innings proved to be not enough to decide the game, and in the top of the 10th, Allen along with right fielder Chris Sweeney produced two runs for the Otters to give them the late lead. A sacrifice fly RBI from Washington third baseman Sam Mende was not enough to suffice a comeback, giving Evansville the 7-6 victory.
Washington will have another crack at the Otters on Wednesday, May 20. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. For tickets, call 724-250-9555, stop by the box office or order online at washingtonwildthings.com/tickets.
