Wild Things Drop Middle Game

EVANSVILLE, In. - Evansville's three-run bottom of the first followed Washington's two-run top half and that was all the scoring in the middle game of the series at Bosse Field Saturday night, as Evansville evened the series with a 3-2 victory over Washington.

Washington's Nick Gotta reached on an error by the shortstop to start the game and went to third on a double by Tristan Peterson. Gotta then scored on an error after a foul out by Wagner Lagrange to make it 1-0 Washington before Peterson scored on a sac fly by Melvin Novoa that made it 2-0.

After Angel Landazuri retired the first two batters of the home half, Ethan Skender singled and stole second. He scored on an RBI double to right center by Dakota Phillips who came in on the next pitch, a two-run homer hit by Jeffrey Baez.

Landazuri ended up with the loss, falling to 0-1, in his Wild Things' debut. He went five innings and allowed the three runs on four hits with four strikeouts and two walks. Stephen Knapp and Andrew Mitchell combined to shutout the Otters for the final three turns they had at the dish.

Evansville starter Zach Smith settled in and ended up getting the win with a quality start of the two runs (neither earned) over six innings. He fanned seven. Kevin Davis, Leoni De La Cruz and Jake Polancic shut things down the rest of the way. The Wild Things had the tying run on in each of their final three trips to the dish, with the go-ahead run on as well in the eighth and ninth innings.

The two teams meet on Mother's Day Sunday for the series in a rubber game scheduled for 1:35/12:35 p.m. CT. Spencer Johnston will make his Wild Things' debut and oppose Evansville's Justin Watland. Watch the game on FloSports at bit.ly/flosportswt or on the FloSports app (subscription required).
