Iowa Wild News Release
ROCKFORD, IL - The Iowa Wild earned a 2-1 overtime win over the Rockford IceHog on Friday night as center Joel Eriksson Ek scored the game winner at 3:44 of the extra session.
With overtime winding down, Eriksson Ek took a pass from Wild winger Landon Ferraro and wristed a shot just underneath the cross bar and over the left arm of IceHogs goaltender Jeff Glass (32 saves). Defenseman Ryan Murphy grabbed the other assist.
The victory marked the second road win of the year for Iowa, and it came in front of 4,272 fans at BMO Harris Bank Center. It was also the Wild's sixth win in the last seven contests overall.
Late in the opening period, the Wild drew first blood when Murphy blasted home his second goal of the season. Eriksson Ek drew the primary assist and team captain Cal O'Reilly earned the other helper. The goal came just seconds after the Wild's first power play expired, and there was plenty of traffic in front of the IceHogs net, including forward Pat Cannone who may have deflected the shot.
After 20 minutes, the Wild led 1-0, as they outshot Rockford, 16-9.
The IceHogs tied the game in the second period, scoring at 6:59. On the play, defenseman Luc Snuggerud took a pass from Vinnie Hinostroza and fired a shot past Wild goaltender Steve Michalek (33 saves). Defenseman Robin Norell also factored into the even-strength goal.
The game was tied 1-1 at the second intermission.
There was no scoring in the third period. In overtime, the IceHogs registered two shots, while Eriksson Ek converted the Wild's only chance. At night's end, the shots were even at 34 apiece.
Each team was 0-2 on the power play.
Michalek is now 4-0-0 on the season. With the win, he ties his own franchise record for consecutive wins, a mark he originally set last season.
The Wild wrap up their road trip in Sunday against the Chicago Wolves. The opening face-off is slated for 3 p.m. Central.
