Sioux Falls Canaries News Release
Sioux Falls, SD - The University of Sioux Falls became the first college team to defeat the Sioux Falls Canaries when three runs scored on wild pitches, led the Cougars to a 4-2 upset of the Birds.
The first run from a wild pitch came in the top of the third inning. Todd Neu hit a ground-rule double under the wall in centerfield, and advanced to third on an infield single by Myles Kuiper. A wild pitch from Travis Kane allowed Neu to score, putting USF up, 1-0.
The Cougars added to their lead with a pair of unearned runs in the fourth inning. An error, a single, and a walk loaded the bases for Zach Warne. Warne drew an RBI walk, and then a wild pitch allowed James Borges to score, and give USF a 3-0 advantage.
USF got one more in the fifth. Cody Minich was hit by a pitch, stole second, advanced to third on a groundout. He became the third Cougars runner to score on a errant pitch, when Jino Gonzalez bounced a wild one to the back stop. At the midpoint of the game, the University of Sioux Falls led 4-0.
The Canaries cut the lead in half in the bottom of the fifth. Two walks and a hit batter loaded the bases for Beau Torbert. Torbert hit a sacrifice fly down the left field line to get the Canaries on the scoreboard. Cory Harris followed with single to drive in his fourth RBI of the pre-season. While the Canaries were able to cut the Cougars lead in half, they would not draw any closer in the 4-2 defeat.
