Florence RedWolves News Release

On an extremely warm and humid South Carolina evening, the (3-5) Morehead City Marlins dove into Sparrow Stadium and swam away with a 7-6 victory over the (7-3) Florence RedWolves.

It was certainly a wild game from the start. Morehead City got things going early in the first inning taking a 2-0 lead. Dominick Cammarata (Tennessee) led things off by being hit with the first pitch of the ballgame sending him down to first. Kodie Tidwell (Louisiana-Monroe) then grounded out into a 4-6 fielder's choice getting Cammarata out at second. Brandon Montgomery (Memphis) followed with a single up the middle, Logan Sherer (UNC-Charlotte) advanced both runners 90 feet with a groundout to second base. The next Marlins hitter, Christian Campbell (Rutgers) hit a ground ball into the 5-6 hole, but the RedWolves shortstop, Adam Renwick (Clemson) couldn't play the ball cleanly. As the ball trickled into left field, both Cammarata and Tidwell scored on the play.

Florence was able to answer right back with five runs in the bottom of the first. Chris Adams (Lee University) drew his 14th walk of the season to begin the inning. Nathan Wierzgac laid down a sac-bunt, but the Marlins' pitcher, Grant Gavin (Central Missouri) threw the ball into short right field, Adams went to third on the error. As he was going to third Morehead City's second baseman missed the mark at third, allowing Adams to score and Advanced Wierzgac to second. The RedWolves second baseman, Chaz Pal (USC-Aiken) was sent to first on a hit-by-pitch, putting runners on 1st and 2nd. Ben Holland (Lee University) lifted a fly ball to right, advancing the runners up a base. On the ensuing pitch, Gavin sent one to the backstop, scoring Wierzgac and put Pal on third. Matt Williams came up and roped one into left centerfield for the RBI single making it a 3-2 game. Drew Wharton (Clemson) followed with an RBI triple.

That would be the final batter the Marlins starting pitcher would face all night as Morehead City went to the bullpen with just one out in the bottom of the first. The new pitcher, Daniel McCrary (North Georgia) got Ray Lanners (Methodist) to pop up for the second out. On the next batter, Renwick, McCrary too bounced on to the backstop scoring Wharton from third, giving Florence the 5-2 lead.

The RedWolves were only able to scratch across just one more run on the evening coming in the bottom of the fourth. Adam Renwick led the inning off with his second hit of the night, doubling down the right field line, then advanced to third on a passed ball. With one out, Chris Adams would collect an RBI off his sac-fly to center field.

Morehead City got right back in it with three runs in the fifth. Sherer led off the inning with a walk. With one out, Alex Kowalczyk (Pittsburgh) singled into right field. Keshawn D'Orso then scored both Sherer and Kowalczyk on a two-RBI double into center. With two away, Matt Collins (Texas A&M) singled into left scoring D'Orso from second.

In the sixth the Marlins were able to tie the game a 6-6. Brandon Montgomery led off with a single right back up the middle, and then stole second. The next batter, Sherer doubled to left, scoring Montgomery easily.

Morehead City scored the deciding run of the ball game in the top of the eight to take the lead, 7-6. Sherer singled into left with one out, Campbell flied out for out number two, but Kowalczyk hit an RBI triple to right center.

The Marlins pitching staff held Florence to just four hits on the night.
