Nashville Sounds News Release
NASHVILLE â Sounds pinch-runner Pat Mahomes scampered home on a Randy Flores wild pitch in the bottom of the 13th inning to give Nashville an 8-7 victory and complete a four-game sweep of the Colorado Springs Sky Sox on Tuesday evening in front of a sellout crowd of 10,139 fans at Greer Stadium.
The win was the eighth in a row for the red-hot Sounds, who remain 2 ½ games behind division-leading New Orleans. The sweep was Nashville's fourth this season (all at Greer Stadium).
Tony Alvarez led off the Nashville 13th with a single but was erased on a Mike Lincoln fielder's choice grounder. Flores proceeded to walk Blake Barthol and Tomas de la Rosa to load the bags. Mahomes was summoned to run for Lincoln and scored the game-ending run when Flores' first pitch to Tike Redman eluded catcher Raul Casanova.
The Sounds looked to be on cruise control en route to their eighth consecutive win after starter John Wasdin allowed only two hits and fanned 11 batters over eight innings and Nashville entered the ninth with a 7-0 advantage. Three Nashville relievers and nine Sky Sox batters later, pinch-hitter Armando Romero grounded out to first for the frame's initial out with the Sounds clinging to a 7-6 lead. Closer Mark Corey was unable to escape the inning, suffering his third blown save in 25 chances as Colorado Springs knotted the contest at 7-7.
Aaron Holbert belted his third home run of the season for the Sounds and Redman, who entered the game as a pinch-hitter in the eighth inning, swiped his league-leading 32nd base in the bottom of that inning for Nashville, which improved to 44-34 with the victory. Tomas de la Rosa added a 3-for-5 outing for the Sounds.
Lincoln (1-1) picked up the victory after throwing three innings of scoreless relief for the Sounds. Flores (6-5) was hit with the loss. Wasdin, who lowered his ERA to 3.20 on the year with his dominant performance, took the hard-luck no-decision despite fanning a double-digit total for the second straight start and upping his league-leading strikeout total to 107 in the contest.
The Sounds join the entire Pacific Coast League for an off day on Wednesday before opening an eight-game road trip at AutoZone Park in Memphis on Thursday. The four-game series with the Redbirds will be the clubs' fourth meeting this season. The Sounds hold an 8-4 advantage in the season series with their cross-state rivals but lost three of four in Memphis in May. Nashville right-hander Nelson Figueroa (7-5, 3.69) is scheduled to start the 7:05 p.m. opener on Thursday against Memphis right-hander Steve Stemle (3-9, 4.17).
Baseball returns to Greer Stadium on the 4th of July, when the Sounds open a season-long 10-game homestand against the division-rival Oklahoma RedHawks.
