Tri-City Storm News Release
OMAHA, Neb. - The Tri-City Storm earned their first-ever win at the Omaha Civic Auditorium in 11 opportunities dating back to the start of the 2009-10 season, as the Storm knocked off the Western Conference-leading Omaha Lancers 3-2. Storm G Adam Wilcox stole the show with his second period performance, while a late-goal scored by RW Michael Vecchione with 1:18 left in regulation proved to be the difference in the game.
Tri-City (13-23-0, 26 pts - 7th in Western Conference) scored the opening goal with 5:35 left in the first period, as C Brian Ward scored his first goal of the season from Vecchione and LW Trevor Moore. It was Ward's third point in his third game back from Dartmouth College and 10th career goal in the USHL.
The Storm went up 2-0 in the second period at the 4:56 mark on C Nick Lappin's team-leading 18th goal of the season from LW Brad Schierhorn and RW Kenny Brooks. The goal followed several highlight saves from Wilcox on a Storm penalty kill earlier in the period.
Omaha (21-12-2, 44 pts - T-1st in Western Conference) finally scored on Wilcox in the second period, as LW Casey Bailey scored two-seconds following a Lancer power play at the 12:12 mark. It was the only goal the Lancers scored on 22 shots in the second period.
With 1:43 left in the game, the Lancers tied the game on RW Greg Gozzo's 15th goal of the season from Bailey and C Jimmy Murray. Murray earned his league-leading 30th assist of the season and second of the game on the tying goal.
However, the Storm responded 25-seconds later on Vecchione's sixth of the season from LW Jared Linnell. It was the first game-winning goal of Vecchione's USHL career, as the Storm improved to 1-8-2 (1-6-2 in regular season) all-time at the Omaha Civic Auditorium.
Wilcox (12-10-0) made 30 saves on 32 shots in the win for the Storm, while G Thatcher Demko (5-3-0) made 13 saves on 16 shots in the loss for the Lancers.
Tri-City went 0-for-4 on the power play, while going a perfect 4-for-4 on the penalty kill. The Storm are now 10-for-10 on the penalty-kill in back-to-back wins.
The Storm will appear on statewide television on KFXL - Fox Nebraska Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. when the team hosts the Stampede. Classic Hits 98.9 FM will air a special pre-game show from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. and an hour-long post-game show immediately following the telecast of the game from approximately 9:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.
