YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - The Fighting Saints dominated the shots on goal battle in Youngstown, but came up short, falling 3-2 to the Phantoms on Friday night.
Jono Davis got the Fighting Saints started offensively in the first period, receiving a pass from Max Gardiner off of a Youngstown turnover, and skating in all along on Matthew O'Connor. Davis slid the puck through O'Connor's five-hole, giving Dubuque the 1-0 lead. Youngstown responded with five minutes to go in the period. Mike Gunn sent the puck ahead to Mike Ambrosia, who centered it to Austin Cangelosi. Cangelosi fired the puck past Matt Morris to tie the game at one. Despite the 1-1 score, the Fighting Saints were outshooting the Phantoms 20-5 at the end of the first period.
Midway through the second period, Todd Koritzinsky carried the puck up the right wing and snapped a shot into the corner of the glove-side of Morris to make the game 2-1. With three minutes to go in the period, Koritzinsky dug a puck free from behind the net and fed it to Ryan Belonger, who buried a chance from the slot to make the lead 3-1 for Youngstown.
TJ Moor brought the Fighting Saints closer twelve minutes into the third period, receiving a Tyler Lundey pass and streaking into the offensive zone. Moor scored the breakaway goal, wristing a shot past O'Connor, to make it 3-2. Fighting Saints affiliate list player Garrett Cecere sent the puck to Lundey to start the play. Although the Fighting Saints benefited from a powerplay and an extra attacker in the final minute, they failed to tie the game. The 3-2 loss came while outshooting Youngstown 42-21.
The Fighting Saints will next travel to Ann Arbor, and they will play Team USA (U17) tomorrow at 6:00 CST. The road trip will come to a close on Sunday with a 4:15 CST matchup against the Lumberjacks in Muskegon.
