WhiteWings Win Battle of Ex-Big League Pitchers

Harlingen - In the first United League Baseball match-up of former- Major League Baseball starting pitchers, the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings defeated the San Angelo Colts 10-9 today at Harlingen Field.

The Colts (27-13) only managed four hits against Jesus Sanchez (3-0), loading the bases with nobody out in the third, but a 1-2-3 double play and a strikeout took care of that. The other two came in the sixth when he allowed an unearned run. With the WhiteWings (18-22) up 8-0, Jason Diaz reached on a one-out error, moved to second after Bryan Frichter walked and scored on an RBI-single by Jason Landreth.

Sanchez struck out eight and walked four in six innings of work.

Ezequiel Astacio (5-1) retired the first four WhiteWings he faced. Eleven of the next 12 batters reached base, however, as the WhiteWings scored seven runs in the second. With one out, Angel Reyes singled and Welinson Baez hit an RBI-double. Astacio hit Joaquin Rodriguez and Sandy DeLeon to load the bases. Casey Allen followed with a two-run single and Agustin hit an RBI-double. Denys Lantigua followed with an RBI-double, Rico Santana hit an RBI-single, and Brian Nichols hit an RBI-double to make it 7-0. Reyes walked and Baez singled to reload the bases, but Rodirguez grounded out to end the inning.

DeLeon led off the third with his first home run to make it 8-0.

Up 8-1 in the with one out in the bottom of the sixth, Alberto Cruz doubled and Baez was hit by a pitch. Rodriguez followed with an RBI- double and DeLeon hit a sacrifice-fly to make it 10-1.

Leading off against Juan Diaz in the top of the eighth, Jason Diaz walked and stole second. One out later, he scored on a single by Landreth. After an error and a walk loaded the bases, Nick Mahin hit into an RBI-fielder's choice to make it 10-3.

Hank Lanto led off the ninth inning with a single. One out later, Diaz and Frichter hit back-to-back singles to load the bases. Landreth followed with a three-run triple and Josh Collazo hit an RBI-double to knock out Diaz with the score 10-7. Wendy Rosa came in and allowed back-to-back RBI-doubles to Hunter Jobes and Mahin to make it a one run game, but Julio Santana got Butch Ballez and Lanto to pop out to the catcher, DeLeon, to end the game with save number 10.

The WhiteWings get tomorrow off before returning to action on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. in Edinburg for the first game of a four-game series against the Roadrunners at Edinburg Baseball Stadium. Right-hander Reymond Cruz (4-3) is expected to face left-hander Pedro Flores (1-3).

The WhiteWings are members of United League Baseball, an independent league of six professional baseball teams located in Texas. In its fourth season, the United League is in the midst of a great summer with teams located in Amarillo, Edinburg, Coastal Bend, Laredo, Harlingen and San Angelo.
