San Angelo Colts News Release

Harlingen, Texas--- The San Angelo Colts (27-13) found themselves trailing 10-1 heading into the eighth inning. The Colts offense scrambled for eight runs but would come up just shy as the Rio Grande Valley Whitewings (18-22) earned the series split with a 10-9 victory.

It was a United League first this afternoon as Jesus Sanchez and Ezequiel Astacio squared off, never had the United League seen two former major Leaguers go head-to-head.

Rio Grande Valley starter Jesus Sanchez began the ballgame in impressive fashion striking out the Colts first three batters in order.

In the bottom of the second inning, the Rio Grande Valley Whitewings widened the distance in a hurry. The Wings offense delivered seven hits and seven runs in the inning, all off of Astacio. Three batters hit twice in the inning including Welinson Baez who had a single and a double.

The Whitewings added another run in the bottom of the fourth inning as Sandy DeLeon jumped on the first pitch of the inning sending a fly ball into the Rio Grande Valley bullpen for a solo shot. The Wings led 8-0.

The Colts reached home plate in the top of the sixth inning. Jason Diaz and Bryan Frichter began the inning with an error and a walk. With two runners on, Jason Landreth lined a single up the middle scoring Diaz. The Wings lead was 8-1.

In the bottom of the sixth, Brett Lester surrendered a double to Alberto Cruz. Welinson Baez then reached on a hit by pitch. With runners at first and second, Joaquin Rodriguez doubled to left center field scoring Cruz pushing the Wings lead to nine. A Sandy DeLeon sacrifice fly would score Baez, Rio Grande Valley led 10-1.

The Colts pushed across two more runs in the top of the eighth inning on an RBI single by Landreth and a Fielder's choice RBI by Nick Mahin. The score stood 10-3 in favor of the Whitewings.

With one out in the top in the ninth inning, San Angelo loaded the bases with three singles. That set the table for Jason Landreth who lifted a deep fly ball to right center field, Wings outfielder Casey Allen could not make the diving play as three runs came into score and Landreth had a three RBI stand-up triple. The score moved to 10-6. With Landreth at third, Josh Collazo doubled down the left field line, scoring Landreth as Rio Grande Valley's lead was cut to three. The hit parade would continue as Jobes and Mahin doubled. With just one out in the ninth inning, San Angelo trailed by only a run. Mahin, who was at second base, represented the tying run. Wings manager Eddie Dennis opted for his closer. Julio Santana came in and slammed the door coaxing Ballez and Lanto into fly outs. The Colts scored eight runs in the eighth and the ninth inning but succumbed to a one run defeat.

Ezequiel Astacio (5-1) earned his first loss of the season going four innings while accepting 11 hits and eight earned runs. Jesus Sanchez (3-0) took the win working 5.2 innings while striking out eight.

The Colts offense collected 12 hits and nine runs. Jason Landreth had three hits including a triple and five RBI's. Josh Collazo had a single and a double adding an RBI and a run scored. Nick Mahin had two RBI's while collecting a double.
