Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release

Harlingen - The Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings beat the Coastal Bend Thunder 6-0 tonight at Harlingen Field to take the season series with a 7-5 record. The WhiteWings' lead over the Thunder for the fourth and final playoff spot is back up to two and a half games.

David Cross (2-0) gave up a lead off single to Amadeo Zazueta in the first, but erased him on a double play. Cross retired the next eight Thunder (32-39) batters before allowing another single to Zazueta in the fourth. He was then caught stealing. Cross faced the minimum 14 batters through the first four and two-thirds innings. He ended up pitching into the seventh inning, allowing no runs on six hits and one walk while striking out four.

The WhiteWings (35-37) got on the board against former University of Texas Pan-American Broncs pitcher Frank James Jr. (3-6) in the bottom of the second inning. Welinson Baez led off with a single and moved to second on a ground out. After Jose Torres walked, he and Baez pulled off a double-steal. The throw went into leftfield, allowing Baez to score to make it 1-0.

With one out in the sixth, Juan Melo singled. Baez and Cabrera walked to load the bases, and Torres drew a seven-pitch walk to force in a run. Sandy DeLeon grounded into an RBI-fielder's choice and Agustin Septimo followed with a two-run triple. Joaquin Rodriguez then hit an RBI-infield single to make it 6-0.

Jose Fragoso pitched the final three innings for his second save.

The WhiteWings travel to Amarillo for the first of four with the Dillas tomorrow night at 7:05 at the Amarillo National Bank Dilla Villa. Right-hander Jose Cordero (1-0) is expected to face right- hander Ralph Roberts (7-3).
