HARLINGEN - Behind a big six-run third inning, the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings defeated the McAllen Thunder 7-3 at Harlingen Field on Friday night.
Tied 1-1 after two innings of play, the WhiteWings' (43-30) bats came alive in the third against the Thunder (30-44), registering seven hits and six runs.
The big six-run third inning provided all the offense needed to secure the win. Wilmer Pino led off the big inning with his 11th homerun of the year, giving the WhiteWings a 2-1 lead. All six runs in the inning came against McAllen starting pitcher Alien Mora (1-4, 7.43 ERA), who is charged with the loss.
The six run cushion was all starting pitcher Alexander Concepcion and the WhiteWings needed to get into the win column. Concepcion (8-4, 5.00 ERA), allowed three runs in six innings, getting the win.
The WhiteWings take on the McAllen Thunder on a Saturday night doubleheader at Harlingen Field for games two and three of the series. Start time for the first game is scheduled for 5:05 PM.
