Castro Pitches Roadrunners Past Colts

EDINBURG, Texas - Julio Castro allowed one run and struck out six as the Edinburg Roadrunners defeated the San Angelo Colts 9-1 Friday night at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.

Castro (3-1) pitched seven innings and scattered nine hits for his third win of the season, first as a starter.

Antonio De Jesus got things started for the Roadrunners in the bottom of the first with a double. Stantrel Smith then followed with an RBI single to left scoring De Jesus. After moving to third on a single by C.J. Beatty, Smith came into score on an RBI fielder's choice by Robert Matlock that gave Edinburg the 2-0 lead.

The Colts (45-28) got on the scoreboard in the top of the second with a lead-off solo home run by Landon Camp cutting the Roadrunners lead 2-1.

The Roadrunners (29-45) responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the second. Jonathan Fernandez led off with a single and then stole second base. A fielding error at first then allowed Fernandez to score from second extending the lead 3-1.

The score remained the same until the bottom of the sixth when the Roadrunners scored six runs on seven hits against right-hander Corey Goudeau. Fernandez, De Jesus, R.J. Harris, Beatty and Matlock each had RBI singles in the inning pushing the lead 9-1.

James Giulietti came in relief of Castro, who did not allow a walk, and tossed a couple of scoreless innings giving Edinburg the 9-1 victory.

The Roadrunners and Colts will play game two of this four-game series Saturday night at Edinburg Baseball Stadium. Aaron Guerra (5-6) is expected to face Adam Kramer (3-2) with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
