Caps Return Home To Face Jose Canseco & Yuma Scorpions

August 12, 2011 - North American League (NAmL)
Edmonton Capitals News Release

After a successful road trip to Hawaii that saw the team post an impressive 6-3 record against Maui Na Koa Ikaika, the Edmonton Capitals are set to return home to host Jose Canseco and the Yuma Scorpions for a six-game series Friday through Wednesday at TELUS Field.

This will be the second visit to Edmonton this season for Canseco and the Scorpions, who got off to a tough start in the North American League's inaugural campaign but have since vaulted up the South Division standings to sit in third with a 30-42 record. Yuma visited the Caps in late June, with the home team winning three of the four games.

Canseco, who played left field for the Scorpions, had a tough time at the plate, going 1-for-10 with one RBI and four strikeouts. But the six-time Major League all-star, former American League MVP and two-time World Series champion has actually put together a solid season offensively, currently holding down a .253 batting average through 53 games with 42 RBI and all eight of his home runs coming in his last 30 games.

The 47-year-old has also been known to take to the mound and pitch a few innings, opting for the knuckleball as his pitch of choice. Canseco has a 1-2 record as a hurler this season with an 8.46 ERA and nine strikeouts. He pitched against the Caps in Yuma on June 20 and gave up six runs in 2.1 innings before getting ejected for arguing with the umpire.

The upcoming series begins on Friday at 7 p.m. with another edition of Fireworks Friday presented by JOE FM, as there will be a spectacular fireworks display immediately after the final out.

The marathon, starting with "Homer At The Bat" which features Canseco, was originally supposed to be played on June 25 but was postponed due to rain.
