HARLINGEN- Rio Grande Valley belted McAllen pitching for 17 hits and James Mays hit a home run as the WhiteWings defeated the Thunder 12-4 Monday afternoon to complete an eight game home stand at Harlingen Field.

The WhiteWings (19-12) held on to their lead in the North American Baseball League's Southern Division by attacking Thunder starter Toro Trevino (0-1) for 10 hits and seven runs in 2 2/3 innings.

Trevino, a Corpus Christi native, began his seventh professional season by allowing five first inning hits to the WhiteWings, most notably Leivi Ventura's RBI single and Ruddy Yan's run scoring double. After Fidel Hernandez drove in Francisco Santana in the second with a one out single to left, the WhiteWings chased the 29-year-old righthander when Hernandez drove in Bryan Marquez and Mays with a two out double. Ventura then met McAllen (10-22) reliever Jeff Sakowski with his own double to drive in Hernandez and give Rio Grande Valley a 7-2 lead.

Meanwhile, Eddie Dennis Jr., getting a spot start, pitched five innings, allowing four hits, two runs, three walks, and fanning three to earn his first decision of the season. Clint Bowker threw the final four innings in relief, allowing five hits, one earned run, walking one, and striking out three.

"I've been happy with my pitching all year long," said WhiteWings manager Eddie Dennis. "It's got us where we are."

Mays capped the scoring with a 2-run homer to right field in the bottom of the eighth inning off righthander Evan Cunningham. Mays, getting his first start in 13 days, was three for three with two walks batting in the final spot in the WhiteWings order as the team's designated hitter.

Hernandez and Yan joined Mays in delivering three hit efforts for the WhiteWings.

The WhiteWings also announced three roster moves. Catcher Juan Fuentes was released, catcher Jhonaldo Pozo was reinstated, and relief pitcher Reynaldo Cotilla was placed on the inactive list with a sore arm.

The WhiteWings will take the 26th off before traveling to San Angelo on Wednesday for a four game series. Their next home game will be July 4 at 6:35 p.m. against the Colts when the City of Harlingen will treat fans to a postgame fireworks show.
