HARLINGEN - The Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings broke a four-game losing streak with an 11-4 win over the Coastal Bend Thunder on Thursday at Harlingen Field.
The WhiteWings (39-42) remain tied for fourth and final playoff spot with the San Angelo Colts.
The WhiteWings got on the board against Hunter Haggerty (0-1) in the bottom of the second. Welison Baez, Welington Dotel and Arlon Quiroz led off the inning with consecutive singles to load the bases. One out later, Roberto Rodriguez reached on an RBI-fielder's choice, Javis Diaz was hit by a pitch and Luany Sanchez walked to force in a run to make it 2-0.
Leivi Ventura led off the bottom of the third with a single and Baez walked. One out later, Arlon Quiroz hit an RBI-double. After David Cardona reached on a fielder's choice, Quiroz scored on a wild pitch and Rodriguez hit an RBI-single to make it 5-0.
The Thunder (28-53) responded against Misael DeJesus (7-5) in the top of the fourth. Ron Fenwick and Kevin Griffin led off with walks and Mike Goss picked up the Thunder's first hit to load the bases. One out later, Paddy Matera hit an RBI-single to score Fenwick. Griffin scored when the ball was misplayed in left to make it 5-2.
Yeurys Tejeda hit his 13th home run of the season with two outs in the bottom of the fourth against Jacob Liedka to make it 6-2.
Quiroz hit his 14th home run to lead off to make it 7-2.
Griffin led off the top of the sixth with a double and Goss walked. After Lammar Guy reached on a fielder's choice, Matera was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Carl Johnson followed with an RBI-single on which Guy scored on the throw to bring the Thunder within 7-4.
The WhiteWings loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the sixth and Dotel hit a sacrifice fly against Frank James Jr. to make it 8-4.
The WhiteWings added three runs in the bottom of the eighth to take an 11-4 lead.
Luis Montano pitched the final 3.2 innings for his first save of the season.
The WhiteWings and Thunder play game two of this four-game series on Friday at 7:05 p.m. It's Frito Lay and AT&T Real Yellow Pages Night. Gates open at 6:05. Right-hander Steve Raburn (3-3) is expected to pitch for the WhiteWings.
