EDINBURG - All nine Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings starters recorded hits and eight scored while setting a new North American League scoring record in a 19-3 victory over the Edinburg Roadrunners Saturday at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
The WhiteWings (3-1) win the series three games to one.
The first six WhiteWings reached base as the WhiteWings jumped out to a 5-0 lead. Jonathan Fernandez was plunked by Roadrunners (1-3) starter Jorge Quintero (0-1) to start the game. After Antonio DeJesus singled, Leivie Ventura, Wesley Dimmitt, and Leo Delgado hit consecutive double and Eric Gonzalez hit an RBI-single.
Ventura finished 5-for-6 with four doubles, three RBI and three runs scored.
The top of the third started with consecutive errors as the WhiteWings sent 12 batters to the plate to score eight runs (two earned) on six hits. The inning included home runs by Gonzalez and Welington Dotel.
Gonzalez finished 3-for-6 with three RBI and one run scored.
The WhiteWings had 23 hits while the Roadrunners had six, two of which came off Gonzalez, who recorded the final four outs.
That made a winner of Alexander Concepcion (1-0), who pitched five innings, striking out three while allowing four hits and two walks.
The WhiteWings welcome the McAllen Thunder to Harlingen Field for the home opener on Sunday at 7:05 p.m. at Harlingen Field. Right-hander Erick Blackwell (0-0, 0.00) is expected to pitch for the WhiteWings. Gates open at 6:05.
