Lake County Fielders News Release
Wailuku, Maui, Hawaii - May 27, 2011 - The Lake County Fielders (2-0) benefitted from four unearned runs to defeat the Maui Na Koa Ikaika, 4-2, in the team's second game of the season.
Fielders left fielder Matt Mansilla reached in the 2nd inning on a fielding error by Maui shortstop Gered Mochizuki, after Mansilla's hard hit ground ball took a carom off of Mochizuki's glove and into the outfield. Mansilla advanced to second base on a passed ball and scored off of Patrick Brooks' RBI single to right, which gave the Fielders the early 1-0 lead.
The Fielders took advantage of more Maui miscues in the 3rd inning. With two outs in the inning and runners at the corners, Fielders centerfielder Lino Garcia hit a grounder to Maui third baseman Richard Bargewell, but Bargwell overthrew first base. That error allowed for Brandon Newton to score the Fielders' second run of the game.
Maui got one run back in the bottom half of the 3rd, when second baseman Justin Rose hit a line drive to center field that escaped the reach of a diving Garcia, giving him a triple. Rose later scored on a sacrifice fly to cut the Fielders' advantage to 2-1.
Fielders starting pitcher Jino Gonzalez (1-0) kept Maui in check, allowing just that one run on three hits in his five innings of work. Gonzalez struck out three and did not issue a walk, before giving way to the bullpen.
Insurance runs were added in the 7th inning by Lake County, sparked by singles from Joe Dempsey and Newton that led off the inning. Dempsey scored on a throwing error by Maui reliever John Holley, Jr., who came in for starter Dan Delucia (0-1). Holley, Jr. attempted to throw out Fielders shortstop Rex Rundgren on a soft grounder, but his throw carried well past first base and into foul territory. Newton was brought home on a sacrifice fly by Fielders first baseman C.J. Ziegler.
Lake County's bullpen limited the damage from the bats of the Na Koa Ikaika. Nick Gaudi, Ben Paxton and player/pitching coach Chris Thompson combined to allow only one run and two hits in their four innings of relief. Gaudi struck out four batters in his two innings of work. Paxton gave up Maui's only other run in the 8th inning, but Thompson, who earned his first save of the season, closed the door on Maui's hopes for a comeback.
The Fielders will try for a third straight victory on Saturday night in game three of their seven-game series in Maui. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35pm local time (11:35pm central). You can listen to the game on 1220 AM WKRS or online at fieldersbaseball.com or wkrs.com.
