Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release
HARLINGEN - Coastal Bend Thunder starter J.J. Trujillo (5-7) didn't allow a hit through the first five and two-thirds innings, but the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings scored all of their runs in the eighth to win 4-1 on Friday at Harlingen Field.
Trujillo didn't allow a hit to the WhiteWings (40-42) the first two times through the order. The only base runner was Leivi Ventura, who drew a walk on a 3-2 pitch to leadoff the second inning. Javis Diaz hit a groundball into right field with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning for the WhiteWings' first base hit, but was caught stealing on the next pitch of the game to end the inning.
Trujillo retired the first two batters in the seventh before allowing a single by Ventura. Trujillo struck out Welinson Baez to end the inning.
Welington Dotel was hit by a pitch to lead off the bottom of the bottom of the eighth. After Arlon Quiroz laid down a sacrifice bunt, Domenic Di Ricco followed with a single to tie the game at 1-1. Roberto Rodriguez reached on a fielder's choice and moved to second on a wild pick-off throw. Diaz hit an RBI-single and Luany Sanchez and Yeurys Tejeda followed with RBI-doubles to make it 4-1.
Trujillo struck out eight while throwing four 1-2-3 innings in seven and two-thirds innings of work.
The Thunder (28-54) struck against Steve Raburn (4-3) in the top of the sixth. With one out, Ron Fenwick lined a 1-2 pitch down the left field line for a ground-rule double. One out later, Lammar Guy hit a grounder to the right side. Baez's throw to Raburn covering first base went wide, allowing Fenwick to score to make it 1-0.
That was it against Raburn, who struck out 10 while scattering four hits and three walks in a complete game. He threw five 1-2-3 innings and retired the last 10 batters he faced.
The WhiteWings and Thunder play game three of this four-game series on Saturday at 7:05 p.m. The first 500 fans in attendance will receive travel mugs, courtesy of Boggus Ford, Fox 2 Cable 6 and Q 94.5 The Rock Station. Gates open at 6:05. Right-hander Andres Rosales (4-4), who was reactivated today after obtaining his green card, is expected to pitch for the WhiteWings.
