HARLINGEN - Six Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings pitchers combined to strike out 11 while scattering three hits in a 10-0 victory over the University of Tamaulipas-Reynosa Buffalos in an exhibition game on Thursday at Harlingen Field.
Blake Nation started the game, striking out five of the six batters he faced. Andy Wells (1-0) followed, striking out the first four batters he faced before inducing a pair of groundouts. Chase Davenport took over in the fifth inning, allowing a single to Bryan Valencia before recording a 5-4-3 double play and a strikeout to get out of the inning.
Eddie Dennis Jr. made his first professional appearance in the seventh, striking out the first batter he faced before recording the first fly-out of the game.
Hun Namgung allowed a pair of singles in a scoreless eighth and Mickey Cassidy threw a perfect inning to end the game.
The WhiteWings scored the only run they needed in the bottom of the second when Roberto Perez hit a two-out double to score Brandon Decker.
The WhiteWings hit for the cycle in the third inning. Aiden Villa led off with a single and got caught stealing. Leo Delgado homered, David Peralta tripled and Wesley Dimmitt hit an RBI-double to complete the feat and put the WhiteWings up 3-0.
The WhiteWings sent 12 men to the plate in the fourth, scoring six runs to put the game out of reach.
Reigning MVP Leivi Ventura hit an RBI-double in the sixth to complete the scoring.
The WhiteWings play an intra-squad game on Friday at 11:05 a.m. at Harlingen Field. All tickets are general admission and cost $2. Gates open at 10:05.
The North American League (NAL) is one of the largest, in number of teams and geography, professional independent baseball leagues worldwide. Formed in the fall of 2010, through a combination of three leagues with over 30 seasons of playing experience between them, the NAL is able to offer opportunities to players and marketing partners that cannot be found in any other league. League play level is considered AA to AAA, the alumni of the three founding leagues (Golden, Northern, United) have seen over 40 of their group reach the major leagues over the years and another 35 players had their contracts purchased by MLB organizations in 2010. A division structure with teams playing a 96 game schedule is set for 2011.
