Collecting 25 hits the Calgary Vipers defeated the extended spring training Cincinnati Reds 17-14 at the Reds Minor League Complex in Goodyear, Arizona. Calgary blasted out hit after hit and scored eight runs alone in the fourth inning. At one point the Vipers led the game 14-3 before being outscored 11-3 in the final four innings.
Leading the way at the plate for the Snakes were Justin Tellam who went four-for-four, Drew Miller who knocked in six runs, and Brian Rios who plated four tallies.
On the mound only one of the 14 runs given up were earned as Stephen Whalen threw four innings without giving up an earned run, Saskatoon's Dan Morari threw two frames without giving up a earned run, J.J. Whetsel hit 94 miles per hour and recorded a one, two, three inning with two strikeouts, and Julian Arballo threw a hitless and scoreless frame.
Calgary grabbed an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning as Wilver Perez doubled, Jonny Kaplan was hit by a pitch, a throwing error advanced both runners, and both Calgary native Aaron Dunsmore and Brian Rios knocked in a run each with groundouts.
The Reds grabbed a run back in the bottom of the frame when Brennan May walked, Juan Silva singled, and May scored on a throwing error for a 2-1 game.
The Vipers increased their lead to 4-1 in the third inning as Perez walked, Dunsmore singled, and Rios drove in both with a double.
The scoring continued in a big way in the fourth frame as Calgary plated eight runs for a 12-1 lead. Matt Kavanaugh, Justin Tellam, and Kaplan all singled to load the bases, Perez knocked in one with a base hit, with two outs Rios walked for a run batted in, Drew Miller hit a monster grand slam, Kevin Price singled, Kavanaugh walked, and Tellam doubles home two.
The Red got two runs back in the bottom of the inning when Mariekson Gregorius and Neftali Soto singled, with two outs Dayne Read walked to load the bases, a run scored and Carlos Sanchez reached on a Price fielding error, and Adam Muenster walked for a RBI and a 12-3 score.
Calgary got those two runs back in the next half inning as Perez and Dunsmore singled, Rios walked to load the bases, and Miller drove in two with a base hit for a 14-3 advantage.
In the bottom of the sixth frame with two outs Read reached for the Reds on an error, Sanchez singled, Muenster cashed one with a base hit, and Danny Vicioso hit a three run shot for a 14-7 score.
After back-to-back scoreless innings for the first time in the game the Vipers scored in the top of the ninth when Dunsmore singled, Jimmy Rohan reached on a fielding error, Price tripled in two runs, and Jeff Giacomini doubled in one for a 17-7 lead.
The Reds fought back in their last at-bats as they scored seven times for a 17-14 final score. Muenster doubled, advanced to third on a groundout, scored on a passed ball, with two outs Fray Sosa doubled, Cristobal Rodriguez reached on a fielding error, Sosa scored on a wild pitch, May and Juan Silva both singled in one each, Humberto Valor reached on a base hit, Read knocked in two with a base hit, and Sanchez tripled in one.
The Vipers continue spring training against the Edmonton Capitals on Friday May 20th at 12:00 PM MDT, they play the extended spring training Seattle Mariners team on Saturday May 21st at 11:00 AM MDT in Peoria, Arizona, and again the Capitals on Sunday May 22nd at 12:00 PM MDT.
Calgary starts the 2011 regular season on the road in Yuma, Arizona on Tuesday May 24th with a double-header against Jose Canseco and the Scorpions.
The Vipers return to Calgary and Foothills Stadium for their home opener on Thursday May 26th at 6:30 PM MDT against their Alberta rivals, the Edmonton Capitals.
