Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release
Harlingen - The San Angelo Colts gave up 11 runs in a game for just the second time this season as the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings won 11-8 tonight at Harlingen Field.
Colts (26-12) starter Chandler Barnard (7-1) entered the game with seven wins in seven starts, allowing no more than five runs and nine hits in a start and holding the sixth best ERA in the United League at 3.26. The WhiteWings (17-21), however, scored seven runs (six earned) on 12 hits in five innings to hand Barnard his first loss.
Down 2-0 in the bottom of the second, Angel Reyes led off with a single and stole second. One out later, Sandy DeLeon singled and Casey Allen walked to load the bases. Agustin Septimo and Denys Lantigua followed with RBI-singles and Rico Santana hit a sacrifice-fly in his return to the lineup to make it 3-2.
Down 4-3 with one out in the bottom of the fourth, Septimo doubled and Lantigua hit an RBI-single. Lantigua moved to second on a wild pick- off attempts and scored on a two-outs single by Brian Nichols to give the WhiteWings a lead which they would not relinquish,
The WhiteWings chased Barnard in the fifth. Reyes and Joaquin Rodriguez led off with singles. Reyes moved to third on Rodriguez's single and Rodriguez moved to second on the throw, setting up an RBI- ground out by DeLeon and a suicide squeeze by Allen to make it 7-4.
Jacob Ramos relieved Barnard in the sixth, but after Santana hit a one- out single, Nichols, Alberto Cruz and Reyes hit consecutive doubles to make it 10-4.
The Colts got on the board against Juan Peralta in the top of the second. With one out, Hank Lanto, Butch Ballez and Ronnie Gaines hit singles to load the bases. One out later, Bryan Frichter hit a two-run single to make it 2-0.
In the top of the fourth, Gaines was hit by a pitch with one out. He then stole second and third before scoring on an RBI-single by Jason Diaz, who stole second and scored when Jason Landreth reached on an error with two outs to make it 4-2 Colts.
Wendy Rosa made his WhiteWings debut by relieving Peralta in the fifth inning, striking out three of the six hitters he faced in the fifth and sixth innings. In the seventh, however, Frichter singled, Landreth walked and Hunter Jobes reached on an infield-single to set-up a Josh Collazo grand slam that made it 10-8.
The WhiteWings got one of those runs right back. Allen led off the bottom of the seventh with a single. Septimo followed by hitting into a fielder's choice and moving to second on a throwing error, allowing him to score on Lantigua's fourth hit of the night, making it 11-8.
Ryan Dixon (2-2) finished up the seventh and pitched the eighth without allowing a run to set-up Julio Santana's league-leading ninth save of the season after a scoreless ninth.
The WhiteWings and Colts play game three of this four-game series tomorrow night at 7:05 at Harlingen Field. Left-hander Eric Domangue (0-1) is expected to face right-hander Kenny Elkind (2-0).
