San Angelo Colts News Release
San Angelo, Texas--- Colts starter Chandler Barnard, the United League leader in wins (7) had his win streak snapped at seven games as the Rio Grande Valley Whitewings (17-21) pounded out eighteen hits and 11 runs defeating San Angelo(26-12) 11-8.
In the top of the second inning in a scoreless ballgame, Hank Lanto, Butch Ballez, and Ronnie Gaines singled consecutively. With two away, Bryan Frichter stroked a single to left field scoring both runners, handing the Colts a 2-0 lead.
Throughout the ballgame, each time San Angelo scored, the Whitewings had an answer. In the bottom of the second, Rio Grande Valley delivered five singles in the inning, putting up three runs and gaining the lead for the first time in the ballgame.
San Angelo took back the lead in the fourth. After Gaines was hit by a pitch, he nabbed second and third by way of steals. Diaz brought him home with a single. With two outs, Jason Landreth grounded to short stop, a throwing error by Joaquin Rodriguez brought in Diaz as the Colts regained the lead 4-3.
Yet again San Angelo relinquished the lead. Agustin Septimo began the inning with a double. A Denys Lantigua single drove in Septimo tying the game. Brian Nichols then sent a double to left center scoring Lantigua as the Wings regained the lead. Rio Grande Valley then added two in the fifth, and another three runs in the sixth to take a 10-4 lead.
The Colts offense refused to go away. With the bases full in the top of the seventh inning, Josh Collazo sent a mammoth moon shot deep into the night down the left field line. The Collazo blast was a no doubter as he drove in four runs on his first grand slam as a Colt, and second homerun of the year. The score stood at 10-8 in favor of the Wings.
The Whitewings added one more in the eighth as they handed the ball over to Julio Santana for the ninth. Besides a single to Nick Mahin, Santana preserved the save as Rio Grande Valley evened the series at one game a piece with a final score of 11-8. The Whitewings closer holds the league lead with nine saves.
Whitewings reliever Ryan Dixon (2-2) earned the win working the seventh and eighth inning without allowing a run. Chandler Barnard (7-1) suffered his first loss. San Angelo's starter went five innings giving up 11 hits and six earned runs. Barnard struck out five while walking one. Jacob Ramos pitched the seventh and the eighth for the Colts, the left hander gave up six hits and three earned runs. Doug Brandt worked a scoreless eighth inning for San Angelo.
The Colts offense knocked in eight runs compiling 11 hits. Jason Diaz had a double and two singles, driving in and scoring a run. Bryan Frichter had two singles with two RBI's and a run scored.
