Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release
Laredo - Javis Diaz reached based four times and scored twice as the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings opened the season with a 5-2 victory over the Laredo Broncos tonight at Veterans Field.
Diaz led off the game with a walk for the WhiteWings (1-0) against Santo Hernandez. He stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on another wild pitch to make it 1-0.
The Broncos (0-1) responded right away when Jason Diaz led off the bottom of the first with a walk against David Cross (1-0) and stole second. A wild pickoff throw got Diaz to third, from where he scored on a Kenneth Gilbert sacrifice fly to tie the game 1-1.
The Broncos took a 2-1 lead in the third when Ryan Flynn and Diaz led off with infield singles. After a groundout advanced them one base each, Gilbert grounded into a fielder's choice to score Flynn.
Jeff Toth led off the top of the sixth with a double against Hernandez. One out later, Vinnie DeCristofaro (0-1) came in to face Diaz, who hit a double. A wild pitch scored Toth and moved Diaz to third and Kevin Griffin hit a sacrifice fly to make it 3-2 WhiteWings.
Hernandez struck out 11 while allowing two runs on two hits and one walk in five and one-third innings.
Cross went six innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits while striking out eight and walking three.
The Broncos threatened against Andres Rosales in the bottom of the seventh, loading the bases with one out, but Griffin made a sliding catch of a foul pop-up and Toth made a sliding stop and flip of a ground ball to end the inning.
The WhiteWings added a pair of insurance runs in the ninth against Angelo Morales when Toth hit a two-run single to knock in Arlon Quiroz and Eric Gonzalez.
Michael Barbosa pitched a scoreless ninth for his first save.
The WhiteWings wrap up this two-game series tomorrow night at 7:35 p.m.
