Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release
EDINBURG -- The Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings took a third consecutive win over the McAllen Thunder, 4-3, but not before the Thunder made some noise late in the game.
The WhiteWings whittled away to get a 4-0 lead on single runs in the first, second, third and fifth innings, while the Thunder struggled to get any early movement going.
RGV starter and winner Celson Polanco held the Thunder at bay early in the game, but was finally taken out in the seventh, giving up two runs on six hits.
The Thunder began their scoring in the sixth inning, getting single runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth frames.
They could not pull off a tie or win in the ninth. First batter Lewis McHale went down striking, but Roberto Rodriguez, already with a pair of hits, singled. But leadoff hitter Craig Hertler struck out and Mike Demperio flied out to end the final bid.
WhiteWings newcomer centerfielder Louie Sumosa started off his local stint in fine style, going 3-for-4 at the plate and nailing down one flyball.
In all, the WhiteWings got 12 hits while the Thunder had seven.
The two Valley rivals go after it in round three Saturday, at Edinburg Stadium, with game four on Sunday. The North American League's southern division leader Fort Worth Cats and the second place WhiteWings start a four game series at Harlingen Field on Monday.
